For centuries, this place was considered the end of the world. Back then, people didn\u2019t know if anything existed beyond this barren cliff with its lighthouse, where all you see is the vast ocean. Looking straight ahead across the Atlantic, you\u2019ll find New York City almost at the same latitude. We quickly booked flight tickets and a hotel, and soon we were on a plane to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.la-blonde-blog.com\/en\/blog\/2020\/03\/29\/lisbon\/\">Lisbon<\/a>. But beyond Lagos, the scenery changed dramatically: cliffs gave way to a plateau, sparsely vegetated and treeless, the ocean darkened, and the sky took on muted, pastel tones. With every mile, I felt an intensifying sense that we were approaching the end of the world. And indeed, ahead lay the end of mainland Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The last town before Cabo de Sao Vicente was Vila do Bispo, and from there, the road leads straight to the lighthouse. This stretch alone was worth the trip: a long, nearly straight road stretches toward the horizon, ending at the dark silhouette of the lighthouse glowing against the fiery orange sunset. On either side of the road lay flatlands with sun-scorched grass, utterly different from the colorful landscapes of Portugal\u2019s southern coast. Some sat on the rocks, wrapped in blankets with thermoses and cameras ready. Others shielded themselves from the cold with emergency foil blankets. It was like a movie moment when your sixth sense tells you something is happening, even if you can\u2019t see or understand it yet. What struck me most were the emotions I felt. There are countless beautiful places in the world, but Cabo de S\u00e3o Vicente isn\u2019t just beautiful\u2014it has a unique energy. Later, I read on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_St._Vincent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" noreferrer\">Wikipedia<\/a> that Cabo de Sao Vicente has been a sacred site since the Neolithic era. Menhirs\u2014prehistoric standing stones\u2014can be found in the area. The Greeks called it the Land of Serpents, and for the Romans, it was a magical place at the world\u2019s edge, home to the gods.
