Sights in Apulia | Trulli of Alberobello

If there were hobbits in Italy, they would definitely live in Alberobello. That was my first thought when I saw the unusual white houses with pointed roofs for the first time – the place looked like a movie set or an Italian Disneyland. The houses with pointed roofs, known as the Trulli of Alberobello, have a very unique architecture. It was the fourth town we visited on our journey through southern Italy, and it probably impressed me the most of all the sights in Apulia.

CITY LIFE IN A FAIRYTALE MAZE

Before we traveled to Alberobello, we had already seen a lot on our Italy trip: Positano, the two incredibly beautiful Villas Rufolo and Cimbrone in Ravello, and a stunning white town on a cliff – Polignano a Mare. I honestly thought it would be hard to top those places. All of these locations are so beautiful and so different – that’s what I love about Italy; there is so much to see and always something new. So, I was pretty sure that after our Amalfi-Calabria-Apulia tour, nothing would leave me in awe. That is, until I saw Alberobello! Of course, I had looked at photos online beforehand, but it’s a completely different experience when you’re right in the middle of this white fairytale town, rather than just seeing it in pictures. I was absolutely speechless when I realized that the Trulli were not just a tourist attraction but that this fairytale maze is an actual residential area.

I couldn’t believe it at first, but people really live here! Some Trulli have regular front doors, nameplates, and mailboxes. I wondered what it must be like to live in such a Trullo. Do they order pizza delivery and watch Netflix here too? What is it like to live in the middle of a tourist attraction? I found it hard to imagine, especially since most Trulli are one-room houses, and some of them are 300 years old. Under each roof, there’s only one room, and if a Trullo has several rooms, it also has several pointed domes. On the roofs, you can often see white ornaments in the form of mystical, religious symbols, or zodiac signs. So, it definitely doesn’t look like an ordinary residential area!

Some of the Trulli are homes, while others are souvenir shops, restaurants, museums, and workshops. I was particularly impressed by the textiles in Alberobello – handmade tablecloths, scarves, and shawls. I love bringing home decorations or textiles from my travels! Here, I bought many kitchen towels with Trulli ornaments. The shopping options in Alberobello are very extensive: from souvenirs to local wines and liqueurs, sweets, and all kinds of pasta and spaghetti. In one store, located in the center of the Trulli area, you can climb a small staircase up to a rooftop terrace. However, you need to buy something in the store first, and by showing your receipt, you’re allowed to go up. From above, you get a beautiful view of the Trulli village with all its round roofs and peaks.

TRULLI OF ALBEROBELLO: IS IT WORTH A VISIT?

Definitely yes! Alberobello is something truly special and unique. On our Italy trip, we visited twice: once passing through from Ostuni to Polignano a Mare, and then a second time because we wanted to take more time to explore everything. But it’s not just the town itself that’s worth seeing; the surrounding area is also beautiful. The road winds between gentle hills and gardens, and you can spot more Trulli scattered across the countryside. The Trulli of Alberobello have long become the postcard image of Apulia. Just like Ostuni or Vieste, but I’ll tell you more about that next time.
