Lake Eibsee | The Most Beautiful Weekend Trip in Bavaria
For everyone who hasn’t yet discovered Lake Eibsee, this post marks the beginning of a small trilogy about Bavaria’s three most beautiful locations – and it starts right here, at Germany’s most breathtaking lake. In the next two articles, I’ll take you to Lake Walchensee and Neuschwanstein Castle. If you haven’t been to these places yet, you absolutely have to visit them! And if you already know them, then let me take you today on a little virtual journey to Lake Eibsee – a place often called the Bavarian Caribbean.
When we want to escape Munich for the weekend and go for a walk in nature, there’s no better destination than Lake Eibsee. First of all, it’s not far from Munich – just about 100 km, along a beautiful country road. Second, the lake is surrounded by mountains and lies right at the foot of the Zugspitze – which, by the way, is a very special landmark. With its 2,962 meters, it’s the highest mountain in Germany. And a trip here truly has everything you could wish for: a stunning turquoise lake, a majestic mountain that you can reach by cable car, and a beautiful hiking trail all around the lake. It’s the perfect place to switch off from city life, slow down, and clear your mind. Trips like this simply make me happy – I always come back feeling refreshed, calm, and recharged with new energy.

In summer, it can get quite crowded – the parking lot full, the paths busy. According to local newspapers, around 650,000 visitors come here every year. In autumn, however, it’s much quieter – especially once most tourists have left after Oktoberfest. That’s why my favorite time to visit Lake Eibsee is the last third of October. It’s still warm, but not too busy. The sun sits lower, the light gets softer, and the trees turn golden and red. The lake itself shines even more intensely in its signature turquoise tones – like a small emerald nestled between the forests.
I’ve been to Lake Eibsee several times, but it looks a little different each time. On clear days, the Zugspitze and the surrounding mountains are perfectly reflected on the lake’s surface – it feels like standing inside a postcard. The water is so clear and calm that sometimes the reflection and the real image are hard to tell apart. One of my photos is actually upside down – you can hardly tell the difference, isn’t it?

A walk around the lake takes about two hours – a bit longer with photo stops and small breaks, of course. There are plenty of small bays where you can step down to the water or just sit and take in the view. When fog rolls in, everything turns mystical and quiet, almost like a movie scene. And that’s exactly what I love about this place: it has so many faces, and each one of them is special.
What I love most is to arrive and sit first on the terrace of the Eibsee Pavilion restaurant, enjoy the view of the lake – and of course, a slice of apple strudel with my coffee is a must! I’ve uploaded a video on my YouTube channel where I share all these beautiful moments with you: the scenic drive, the parking area, the terrace with the apple strudel and the cream puff (which I shared with my daughter) – and of course, the full walk around Lake Eibsee.
LAKE EIBSEE: BETWEEN CALM AND PURE ADRENALINE
There’s a very special attraction here in winter: when Lake Eibsee is frozen, you can actually walk across it. I’ve done it myself – and I show it to you in my video as well. In the first part, you’ll see Lake Eibsee in October, and halfway through – in April, when the lake was still completely frozen. It was an unforgettable experience! On one hand, it was a bit scary – standing right in the middle of the ice, knowing that there were about 35 meters of water below me, roughly the height of a twelve-story building. Just that thought was breathtaking! But the ice was thick enough, otherwise walking on it wouldn’t be allowed. So I crossed the entire lake on foot. On the other hand, it was incredibly beautiful – from the middle, you could see the full mountain panorama, and the scenery looked completely different from how it does on land. That feeling of standing on frozen water was truly unforgettable.

And that’s where our little trip to Lake Eibsee comes to an end – a place that, for me, is one of the most beautiful in all of Bavaria. But the journey doesn’t stop here: next time, I’ll take you to Neuschwanstein Castle and show you, one by one, my favorite places in Bavaria.
