Spring Beach Holiday | Soaking Up the Sun in Portugal

Spring is the time when my longing for summer usually grows so big that I get really restless – and all my thoughts revolve around one question: Where is it warm and sunny right now? Part of this is because I grew up in the warm south and find it hard to tolerate winter. Another reason is that winters in Munich are no longer the beautiful, white winters they used to be, but a mix of rain, wind, and penetrating cold. But I feel like I complain about that in almost every other blog post – so nothing new. Sunshine is what people need to be happy! And to escape everyday life, traveling is also a great idea. So, I started thinking about where I could fly quickly within Europe to get some beach time in the spring and soak up the sun.

And I immediately thought of Portugal – more specifically, Praia do Guincho, a well-known surfer beach not far from Lisbon. In March, I expected strong winds and high waves, but surprisingly, the beach presented itself in its calm version: absolutely windless. By the end of April, the Côte d’Azur near St. Tropez is usually already warm enough for sunbathing without getting into the water. But it was only March – and I didn’t want to wait that long. My energy reserves were already completely drained after the winter and my body was truly crying out for some sun. Portugal, along with Italy, is one of my absolute favorite destinations. It’s quick to reach from Munich, and even though the Atlantic is still pretty cold this time of year and swimming is really for the brave, the sun offers enough warmth to relax on the beach and feel the warmth on your skin. It’s perfect for giving your body a good dose of Vitamin D and letting your soul unwind.

SUNSHINE, ATLANTIC BREEZE & NEW ENERGY

After the dark winter months in Munich, the desire for sunshine isn’t just a wish – it’s a real need. And that’s exactly what I got here. This mix of wide nature – the Guincho beach is huge –, the gentle sound of the waves, and the fresh, salty Atlantic air is just perfect for recharging. I’m really not a health junkie, but there are two things that immediately bring more energy and good vibes: sunshine and the sea. That’s why I didn’t just relax in the sun, but also spent hours walking along the beach. No workout in the world feels as good as moving by the ocean. The fresh air that lets you breathe deeply, and the sunlight that energizes every cell – this combination is simply what you need after a long winter.

THE PERFECT SPOT FOR A SPRING BEACH HOLIDAY

Spending a few days here – it’s simply the kind of lifestyle I could never go without. Portugal has so many beautiful sides. Among other things, the food here is by far the best food ever. Fresh shrimp, fish in all kinds of variations – it doesn’t get any better than this. And at Guincho Beach, there’s one of my favorite hotels in Portugal: Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho. This beautiful hotel was converted from a 17th-century fortress into a five-star hotel – just for that reason, it’s worth flying here. For anyone wanting a beach holiday in the spring and hoping to take their first tan home, this place is definitely worth the trip.

  1. It’s funny how we all crave a bit of sunshine after those long winters! Portugal’s beaches really seem to offer the perfect escape, especially when you find a calm day like this. Do you have any other beach destinations in Portugal that are great for a relaxing spring trip?

    1. La Blonde says:

The entire Algarve is perfect for a spring getaway, from Faro to Sagres – spectacular beaches, charming coastal towns, and plenty of sunshine, even in early spring.

  2. Munich winters sound rough—I can see why you’d head for the sun! Praia do Guincho is stunning, and catching it on a calm day must’ve been such a treat. Makes me wonder what other off-season beach spots in Europe have that kind of magic.

  3. Love how you captured the in-between season feeling—when it’s not quite winter, not quite spring. I’ve always associated Praia do Guincho with wild surf, so hearing about its calmer side was unexpected and refreshing!
